Benjamin Sa(e)rga(e)nt (various spellings)Benjamin Sa(e)rga(e)nt married Amelia Vigar at Nutfield on April 30 1834.
They were my great great grandparents and they had 10 children:
Philip, Ann, Ellen, Mary, Thomas, James, Benjamin, Amelia, John & William.John and William (my great grandfather) were twins. John and his wife Jane (Blaker) emigrated with all but one of their children to America in the early 1900s. I am in touch with three of John's descendants - one in Cornwall, one in New York State, and one in British Columbia, Canada ; also with a descendant of Thomas, living in Sutton, Surrey.
I would like to know more about my great great grandfather Benjamin. As well as wishing to trace the family tree further back, information about his siblings could well provide links with many other Sa(e)rga(e)nts, including several with whom I am already in contact.
My great grandfather, William, founded a coal merchants business in Merstham around 1890 and this subsequently became Sargant & Martin. Any information about him and the firm would be very welcome.
My grandfather, Jesse Sargant, was born and brought up in Merstham, but later in life moved to Essex where he was an engine driver on steam locomotives involved in the construction of the vast Becontree council housing estate - still believed to be largest such estate in the world.
Was his first experience of steam engines learned in the Merstham area I wonder ?
Jim Sargant
