BESSELL FAMILY OF MITCHAMI am seeking any information regarding the BESSELL family of Mitcham Surrey.
I am related to this family and to MOWBRAY BESSELL who is believed to have been born in Mitcham in 1803 to Charles and Jane Bessell.
His siblings are believed to have been:
Charles, John, Edward Corbett, Bowen, Marian, Caroline and Hulme. The Bessell family were members of the Wesleyan Church. Mowbray’s father, Captain Charles Bessell is believed to have served in the Horse Guard and was later appointed the first Secretary of the General Steam Navigation Company from 1824 until 1838. The family is understood to have later moved to Chelsea. Hulme is reported to have established a coffee plantation in Ceylon.
It is suggested that Caroline married a Henry Lloyd and migrated to Australia with her large family. Mowbray migrated to Australia about the mid 1820’s and settled in Sydney and then Wollongong with a convict wife Mary Ann Brown, although no records have been found of their marriage.Member 9359
