St. George's Cathedral Notice Books -
Recently Deceased 1843 - 1897.Bernard Cullen, a member of East Surrey FHS, has kindly offered Society members a free search of his Recently Deceased index taken from the parochial records at St. George's Roman Catholic Cathedral, Southwark.
No records were kept of burials at the church however he has discovered a number of Notice Books in the parochial archives dating from 1843 to 1897. These books were used at Mass each Sunday when the Priest would read out the notices to advise the congregation of any events in the past or coming week. One very regular notice was to announce the names of those who had recently died. As there is a total lack of burial records he has made an alphabetical record of these names. They are not an official record but it could be a useful guide if a death cannot be found in any other records. It is true to say that the majority of the names are of Irish origin but there are many names from various European countries and of course, many British names. Is there anyone out there looking for Mary Berchmace reported as recently deceased in May 1852?
Or Emanuel Delatorre in March 1845?
Elizabeth Holdbrook in May 1852 and
Thomas Maystone in May 1848?
These are just four of approximately 13,500 names listed. Some of the surnames only appear once in the fifty two years recorded. (The years August 1883 to December 1885 have not been found). All names are listed with the spelling as used in the books with no attempt to make any corrections. These are not official records but they are probably reasonably accurate.
With the permission of The Cathedral Dean, Canon James Cronin, Bernard can offer a free search to members who would like him to check any names in his index.
